#FutureInYourHands – This motto properly describes how TÜV SÜD empowers its employees. It’s best to hear from TÜV SÜD executives and staff members what their personal experiences are working for TÜV SÜD.
Can you describe your role within the company?
I have been recently promoted to Regional Manager for the Michigan area, which encompasses Auburn Hills, Plymouth and Holland. We have two environmental labs and one EMC lab within this region.
How did you choose this career path?
I would say this career path chose me. Once I finished college, I began networking, which lead me to various opportunities within the automotive industry. I started my career as a sales engineer, but eventually worked my way into a technical role within the environmental test labs. I enjoyed facing new challenges daily and worked well within the fast-paced environment. Working for TÜV SÜD, I’ve had such a great career growth experience, working my way up from Sales, to Technician, to Lab Supervisor, to my current role as Regional Manager.
What do you enjoy most about your job and working at TÜV SÜD?
I love the people that I work with. We face new challenges and tasks every day that require us to collaborate in order to solve problems, so we’ve established a great team dynamic. Right now, within the transportation industry, the market is shifting more rapidly toward electric and autonomous vehicles. I like working through the innovation cycle and figuring out where TÜV SÜD will go next in our market space. The industry presents challenges that are interesting to navigate and I enjoy being a part of making the decisions that lead us toward our goals for the future.
Are there challenges you've faced in your career that have taught you important lessons?
I aim to tackle challenges through collaboration and perseverance. Everyone is working under time constraints, so it’s important to put your best foot forward to advance projects for our clients. The testing industry is dynamic and even the best laid plans are subject to change. I believe TÜV SÜD maintains a high level of integrity by facing challenges head on and working hand-in-hand with our customers to bring their products to market.
What do you think the industry will look like 20 years from now?
I believe the transportation industry is going to be moving from an ownership model to more of a service model within the next 20 years based on younger consumer demands. Electric vehicles will become the dominate vehicle platform, although alternative power generation systems will still be in development as we start to consider the overall product life cycle of electric vehicles and where the power is ultimately generated. That being said, I still believe there will be use of traditional internal combustion engines in rural areas in the off-highway applications.
Autonomous vehicles will probably have taken hold in major metropolitan areas where traffic patterns and infrastructure can be better controlled. This, combined with a service model, will cause the focus to go from the driving experience to the rider experience. I don’t think technology, or perhaps the larger hurdle, legislation and liability issues, will be resolved to be fully autonomous across the globe with the next 20 years.
When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
I love spending time with family. I have two young children; my son plays soccer and my daughter is learning to play piano. Soccer is one of my favorite activities, so it’s great to watch my son develop his own skills and love of the game. In addition to playing soccer, I enjoy running outdoors when I have some downtime.
