Employee Spotlight: Jason Hamelin

Jason Hamelin Senior - Financial Executive at TÜV SÜD AmericaJason Hamelin

Senior Financial Executive at TÜV SÜD America

#FutureInYourHands – This motto properly describes how TÜV SÜD empowers its employees. It’s best to hear from TÜV SÜD executives and staff members what their personal experiences are working for TÜV SÜD.

Can you describe your role within the company?
I am responsible for the Controlling Department for the Americas Region, which includes the Financial Planning and Analysis Team and the Billing Team. We are responsible for all things financial, which consists of financial budgeting and forecasting, Division and Business Line support, merger and acquisition activity, writing business plans for expansion into new geographies, and new product and service expansions. Generally, we help people solve problems within the company and act as business partners to all the Divisions in our Region.

How did you choose this career path?
I went to school for Accounting and started out as a General Accountant but decided to go to graduate school in order to learn more about other aspects of business. I then explored the area of financial planning and analysis and got exposure to being integrated within a business and seeing the process from sales to operations, to finance. What I find most interesting is helping people to solve real-world problems and bringing a greater level of financial transparency to the company.

What do you enjoy most about your job and working at TÜV SÜD?
It’s not routine. There’s a certain routine component to any finance job, but there’s always variety because we get to work on different projects throughout the year. We work to guide the company on the right path towards a financially healthy operation. It’s also a challenging and fast-paced work environment. I’ve been here almost 13 years, and the atmosphere makes it a great place to be. Every day, we’re all working as a team towards the same goal.

Are there challenges you've faced in your career that have taught you important lessons?
Working in a matrix organization has its challenges. Figuring out how to navigate and get your job done and work with all the right people is something that requires consistent perseverance and relationship development. That has taught me how to forge relationships with people not only across different departments but also across different countries in order to get my job done properly. It’s been a great learning experience for me over the years.

When not working, how do you spend your spare time?
I spend a lot of time volunteering, coaching my kids’ soccer teams, and helping the community. I also enjoy staying active by surfing and skiing with my family, as well as playing soccer with friends.
