Regional Program Director and Global Head of Functional Safety for TÜV SÜD

#FutureInYourHands – This motto properly describes how TÜV SÜD empowers its employees. It’s best to hear from TÜV SÜD executives and staff members what their personal experiences are working for TÜV SÜD.

Can you discuss your role within the organization?
I am the Functional Safety Product Manager for TÜV SÜD and Global Head Functional Safety in terms of internationally. I ensure that organizations are taking the proper measures to meet a unison safety standard, whether it be through employees or machines.

Why did you choose to pursue this career path?
I have over 15 years’ experience in this career. I have always been fascinated by other cultures and this job has fortunately led me to move to different countries such as Japan and Singapore. I have been interested in safety in terms of new developments and TÜV SÜD works for different clients and different technologies. This intrigued me because it was a rare and purposeful path that had huge potentials in the US.

What do you enjoy most about your job and/or engineering in particular?
I really enjoy working with people. The technical work you get to understand and the ability to progress closer to technology is amazing. I love the fact that you are able to be part of a solution and find the answers to everyday problems. It is very rewarding going home at night and knowing that I fixed something and helped people along the way.

Why is functional safety important to an organization?
Functional safety is important because it gives the organization a frame work of how one can understand the risks of their products and systems. An organization is able to understand the risk at hand, how to mitigate the problems, and overall find a solution.

What is the most common risk you see in customer’s applications?
The most common risks I see have to deal with financial loses which ties along to reputation loses and overall liability issues.

Are there any challenges you’ve faced during your career that have taught you important lessons?
Different perspectives in life is a huge challenge and eye-opener that I have continually learned and grown from. Seeing other perspectives on different topics opens the door to learn from your own personal mistakes and how to approach something differently. Moving from Germany to Asia was a very hard transition because operations and the structure of how businesses are run in the two countries is entirely different. I now have learned that there is new information and exposure to varying countries and operational procedures.

What advice do you have for young people considering entering this field?
People have to compete with manufacturers and buyers in this field which may seem a bit intimidating. Also, functional safety may seem boring to one on paper but in reality, it is exciting because you get to understand and have exposure to different technologies. This role involves a rewarding experience to be part of a solution and see processes being carried out with the TÜV SÜD mark and knowing you were involved in the success.

Do you have any hobbies you enjoy in your spare time, or anything else you would like to share?
I really enjoy playing sports and partake in Triathlons.
