An incredible variety and volume of Internet of Things (IoT) devices are being produced of late. Manufacturers can help their customers by improving the IoT devices' security, meaning the devices provide their customers the functionality needed to ensure safety in their systems and environments. Manufacturers can also help their customers by providing them with the cybersecurity-related information they need.

Midea, one of the global smart home business groups, requested TÜV SÜD, a leading global provider of quality, safety and sustainability solutions, to make an evaluation for their smart home products based on NISTIR 8259, which is developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the U.S. It includes six cybersecurity-related activities for IoT device manufacturers, e.g. device identification, device configuration, logical access to interfaces, software and firmware update, and regulates the IoT device cybersecurity capability with a core baseline and foundational cybersecurity activities.

These reports indicate that the tested Midea dishwasher, air conditioner, dehumidifier and refrigerator products are considered to have reached the core baseline stipulated by the standard for defined activities in their security solution. TÜV SÜD provides these testing to help manufacturers alleviate cyber security-related efforts and build customers confidence in IoT devices by testifying about the device's cybersecurity capabilities.
